CHAPTER TEN

Juliet Cross

“Thank you all for tuning in. Be sure to listen next week, I’ve got an interview with a private eye that worked with the Smith family on Francesca Smith’s disappearance almost a decade ago. Until next time, lock your doors.”

I hit stop on my recording and leaned back in my chair with a heavy sigh. I’d recorded six episodes this week. Since breaking up with the Civella brothers, I’d been experiencing this strange rollercoaster of emotions, teetering somewhere between anxiety, fear, and disappointment. The first day, William sent over a box of my belongings. It made my decision feel final. The silent treatment was making me sick to my stomach, but it was also oddly familiar, too. It reminded me of the days where I thought he was just a broody bodyguard for Vicky. I didn’t know how to navigate it. His quick dismissal of me was like a swift punishment and made me feel guilty for handling things the way I did.

I called him once and left him a message, letting him know that I was available to meet if he wanted to talk about everything. I made sure to include that I was willing to work through this if he made some changes, but the depressing silence that greeted me was answer enough. To say I was devastated would be an understatement, but I had to keep strong. I had to choose myself first.

Malice and I had become pen pals. Except we weren’t writing letters, we were just mailing a necklace back and forth. Every night, I’d drop it off in his mailbox, and every morning, it would be back in mine.

I knew it was only a matter of time before things escalated. This game would entertain him for only a little bit, but pretty soon he would level up and I’d have to navigate his vindictive nature.

I got the job at the funeral home, thanks to Kelsey’s tits and the owner’s determination to win a date with her. It was weird not going to Eden’s Place every night. And aside from classes, I was mainly keeping to myself at Gram’s house. Luckily, I hadn’t had to talk to her about what was going on with the guys. She was in Oklahoma with some friends at one of the largest bingo tournaments in the country. She’d been doing so well with managing her Parkinson’s disease that I felt good about her traveling with friends, and apparently, she was on a pretty big winning streak.

I was lonely. Perhaps that’s why I was pouring all my attention into my podcast. I had enough episodes to get me through the month stored up.

I went to open up my editing software, since I didn’t really have anything else to do, but an instant message pinged on my Google chat, making me pause. It was my podcast email. Now that I had ten thousand subscribers, it wasn’t unusual for them to send me emails or articles, but I’d never had a chat request before.
